Reimagining a bright future for CECS

When asked to describe herself, Natalie Lloyd, Associate Dean Education (ADE) at the ANU College of Engineering and Computer Science (CECS), nominates the titles of engineer, artist, educator, administrator and “all of those things combined as an ADE at ANU.” This diverse skill set is set to be of benefit to staff and students at CECS, as she embarks further into a role she commenced earlier this year.

“I see the role as ADE as the advocate for the student experience, and that underpins everything I do,” she says.

“The role of the ADE is a very privileged position, and that privilege, I believe could be used to connect, promote and enhance the position of education at ANU and more broadly. So I see myself as an advocate for those passionate teachers that we have, and for those fantastic researchers that bring their research into the classroom and inspire the next generation.”

Natalie’s love of teaching stems from her time as a student, choosing to study engineering after being strongly encouraged in the direction of medicine and law. As a student, she was inspired by a “fantastic lecturer”, the experience encouraging her to model her teaching on this educator when pursuing her own academic career, with a particular highlight to-date involving the creation of transdisciplinary masters programs. Chief among her plans as CECS ADE is the continuation of the Reimagine 2019 to 2025, and the activation of innovative new learning spaces.

“We have got a fantastic opportunity now in 2021, with the new structure of CECS. We have three new schools – the School of Engineering, the School of Computing, and the School of Cybernetics – and the opportunity to harness the strengths of these three new schools, to reactive Reimagine, is a really exciting opportunity for me as a new ADE,” she says.

“Joining a university like ANU and a college like CECS with an enormous legacy, an enormous energy for change, and the capacity to create new and different ways of doing things, is an absolute gift as an ADE.”
